| The CHAMPLAIN-HUDSON TRADE CORRIDOR is one of five officially recognized CROSSBORDER ECONOMIC REGIONS evolving along the north-south transportation systems which link the U.S. and Canada. |
| THE TRADE CORRIDOR As North American commerce shifts into a series of north-south regions, the corridor stretching from Quebec City to New York City is quickly emerging as one of the top zones for international trade, business and manufacturing in this continent. And the outstanding ports at either end and in between are making it a sure bet as a leading gateway from North America to the world and visa versa! The core zone from Montreal to Albany is already exploding with new commerce and economic activity, with north-south trade along the Corridor almost doubling each year! It is becoming a unique, bi-national COMMON MARKET which is increasingly interdependent in terms of business, culture, recreation and all other aspects of life and commerce. It is offering a world of opportunities for all within the Corridor, and opportunities to the world for those who choose to tap its ports, transportation links, people and resources. |
THE GATEWAY The border crossing at Champlain/Lacolle is already one of the TOP THREE COMMERCIAL GATEWAYS linking trade and business between the U.S. and Canada. Its importance increases each year as north-south activity grows steeply and as Montreal's status as North America's #2 global gateway grows steadily. What makes the future of the Champlain/Lacolle Gateway most exciting is the quality and character of its facilities! While other major U.S.-Canada gateways are at bridges or tunnels which restrict movement and future growth while also adding cost, Champlain/Lacolle is a LAND CROSSING, offering ample space to accommodate current and future business demands. And while many other areas have aging transportation systems, the highways in the Champlain Trade Corridor are top notch! Rail and shipping are also outstanding. The Corridor follows the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway from Montreal all the way to the Port or New York. CP acquired the Delaware & Hudson Railway in 1991 and has invested more than $200 million (US) in the modernization of its lines. World class shipping links also service the Corridor from end to end -- from the incredible facilities of the Port of Montreal (# 2 in North America) to the Port of New York (#1), with the Port of Albany in between, and the New York State Canal System making it possible for both barge and recreational vessels to connect from the Hudson River to Lake Champlain. The Chambly Canal connects Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence River for recreational boaters. THE COALITION It is only natural that this new Economic Region is developing new relationships and links among businesses, government leaders, organizations, professionals, schools and economic developers. The CHAMPLAIN-HUDSON TRADE CORRIDOR AND GATEWAY COALITION is an informal alliance of all these individuals and interests, and is growing each and every month as more and more participants in this unique regional economy are realizing the importance of becoming an active part of its future. The Coalition is facilitated and coordinated as a service of the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce and its Can/Am Connection Council, and is open to any interested business, agency or organization in the Corridor region. Membership in the Coalition is free, and brings a monthly newsletter as well as invitations to periodic Roundtables and special events. OUR MISSION AND GOALS
